Villa Monte Cassino

The Polish War Cemetery at Monte Cassino

On the mountainside, between the abbey and the valley, lie the Polish soldiers who fell in May 1944. It is one of the most meaningful places for Polish visitors.

What it represents

The cemetery holds over a thousand fallen of General Władysław Anders' Polish II Corps; Anders himself is buried here, by his own wish, among his soldiers.

The inscription recalls the price of freedom: 'For our freedom and yours'.

The visit

The cemetery lies along the road up to the abbey and can be visited free of charge. It is a place of contemplation: please be respectful and quiet.

18 May, the anniversary of the capture of Monte Cassino, is the most heartfelt date for the Polish community.
